About this movie

When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever. Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From the imagination of director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) comes a gothic romance masterpiece starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. The Devils Backbone #2 ? All the acting was up to scratch, but I felt as though he's already gone through these themes, particularly the the beginning and ending monologue voiceovers by the lead actress. I also think it shows it's hand too much with the ghosts, something subtler would have built up tension more. At least in the earlier parts. Other than this it was a finely crafted film. I also found the heroines decent from a witty, independend woman to emotionally fragile girl fascinating.

Hovers between a stylised presentation and a unnecessary realism particularly with regards to the gratuitous violance. As a result it lacks any atmosphere. The leading lady has neither presence nor much physical appeal. OTH it is entertaining picking out the painful references to other movies and seeing if you can predict the next plot twist accurately. The costumes are beautiful. The villainess steals the entire movie.

I really only watched it for Tom Hiddleston and because del Toro directed it. I'm not really into horror but I loved this. So Hammer Horrorish and gorgeous though some of the outfits were on the garish side. So worth it.
