THIS IS NOT A DOCUMENTARY! This is a drama based on a true story. There is a BIG difference! So, someone messed up when they put it in the documentary genre. This is an excellent film based on the long and ghastly murderous career of Russia's first recognized serial killer, Andrei Chikatilo. The actors do a wonderful job of portraying their real life counterparts. I've watch this film many times, and it is still a great film to watch. Whether you are aware of the facts of this story, or come to the film without any previous knowledge of it, I believe you will be glued to your screen from beginning to end! The ending has a statement saying that the Russian forensic specialist said that she had discovered something new, a person with two different blood types. They state that others scoffed at her comment, suggesting she made a serious mistake that set Chikatilo free the first time, and was creating an excuse for her error. Well, she was right! Chikatilo was something new to science, a non-secretor. No apology was rendered, though she, certainly, deserves it after they held her up for ridicule!

This movie hits all points for me. The actors gave life to and made the charectors engaging, the story is layered and complex with good pacing. I felt as if I were a part of this unfamiliar world. Overall this is one of the rare five star movies.
