About this movie

With unprecedented access, CARTEL LAND is a harrowing look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy - the murderous Mexican drug cartels.

In the Mexican state of Michoacan, Dr. Jose Mireles, a small-town physician known as "El Doctor," leads the Autodefensas, a citizen uprising against the violent Knights Templar drug cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region for years. Meanwhile, in Arizona's Altar Valley - a narrow, 52-mile-long desert corridor known as Cocaine Alley - Tim "Nailer" Foley, an American veteran, heads a small paramilitary group called Arizona Border Recon, whose goal is to stop Mexico's drug wars from seeping across the US border.

With never before seen footage of the brutality of this seemingly unstoppable war, filmmaker Matthew Heineman gives us front-seat access to a real and shocking story about an inescapable web of violence, corruption and exploitation. 2015 A&E TELEVISION NETWORKS, LLC.

My wife and I were in Mexico when this went down. We cancelled a trip to Michoacán State thanks to the kindness of the lovely Mexican people who warned us of the problems there whilst waiting in LA airport for a flight to Mexico City. I think the documentary can be summed up from the news article I read in a Mexican newspaper when we landed that said: Two drug cartels are warring in Michoacán State and there are shootouts between Cartel members, Federal Police, State Police, the Army, Farmers and two weeks prior vigilantes appeared from nowhere wearing pristine white hockey masks and driving new, clean black 4x4s and just two days before the vigilantes had a shoot out among themselves and killed 18. This is documentary offers a brilliant insight into the fortitude and resilience of the Mexican people in taking control of their lives away from the cartels and ultimately why the odds are so stacked against them.

This is a very good documentary on the lives of the people defending the mexican people that have been terrorised by the cartels. I HIGHLY recommend this documentary. The people that are in this documentary are true heros for what they are doing to protect their people. So please, whenever you can, have a look at this documentary.
