About this movie

A wealthy spoiled brat falls off an ocean liner and is rescued by a Portuguese fisherman. Forced to endure a three month voyage, he learns to love the sea and earns his place among the crew. Based on the Rudyard Kipling story, this is a timeless family adventure classic. Oscar-winner Spencer Tracy ("Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?," "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde") earned his first Academy Award as the fatherly fisherman. Co-starring child-star Freddie Bartholomew ("David Copperfield") and Oscar-winners Lionel Barrymore ("It's A Wonderful Life"), Mickey Rooney ("National Velvet," TV's "Bill") and Melvyn Douglas ("Being There," "Hud"). Directed by Oscar-winner Victor Fleming ("The Wizard of Oz," "Gone With The Wind"), it was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Screenplay. A great movie. The shots of real Gloucester fishing schooners under sail are alone worth the price of admission several times over.
