About this movie

Hilary Swank stars in her Oscar® winning role of the true life story of Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry. Brandon Teena is the popular new guy in a tiny Nebraska town. He hangs out with the guys, drinking, cussing, and bumper surfing, and he charms the young women, who've never met a more sensitive and considerate young man. Life is good for Brandon, now that he's one of the guys and dating hometown beauty Lana. However, he's forgotten to mention one important detail. It's not that he's wanted in another town for grand theft auto and other assorted crimes, but that Brandon Teena is actually a woman named Teena Brandon. When Brandon's best friends make this discovery, his life eventually is ripped apart by betrayal, humiliation, rape, and murder.

Leslie, not to be rude but did your sister ever find out about Brandon's sexual identity? And was she still in love with him after the fact?

I continue to love this movie, I highly recommend it. As a female to male transguy, it was extremely emotional and well written. It shed some light on the topic, providing harsh truth. There aren't many movies that speak to transgender males, but this is definitely one. I would recommend no matter if you're straight, gay, bisexual, male, female, nonbinary, whatever. It's an all around good movie with a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

This movie truly shows what it was like coming out and living your truth when it wasn't "cool" or a "fad" to be gay, transgender, lesbian, a-sexual, etc. These days people ware being "gay" as a badge of honor or they sleep with the same sex because they're "curious" or their friend tried it, etc. There's nothing "cool" about being gay, lesbian, etc. It's how we were born just like others are born "straight!" I always say to people when they ask me, when did you know you were a lesbian? My reply, when did you know you were "straight?!" It's no different! Sure there are those who choose to flip to the other side because they've been hurt by the opposite sex but they quickly realize that the emotions, sex, arguments, etc is no different! We're born this way just like others are born straight! We're not some fair or circus peep show! We have emotions and hurt and love just like the next person. Remember that the next time you meet one of us or you decide to "try" it because you're "curious!" There's a human being you're using to satisfy your curiosity or to be cool!!!!!!!
