About this movie

The year is 1348. Europe has fallen under the shadow of the Black Death. As the plague decimates all in its path, fear and superstition are rife. There are rumors of a village hidden in marshland that the plague cannot reach. There is talk of a necromancer who leads the village and is able to bring the dead back to life. Ulric (Sean Bean), a fearsome knight, is charged by the church to investigate these rumors. Joined by a young monk and a small consort of soldiers, the journey ahead will lead them into the heart of darkness where faith is challenged and put to the ultimate test.
MPAA Rating: R for strong brutal violence, and some language

The movie is really quite slow, and isn't at all what I expected it to be, but if I look beyond that, I see themes explored in a very dark but effective way. When I first watched, I hadn't read the description at all, and was expecting more fantasy horor. In actuality, it's actually a very realistic, gritty movie. There is nothing in this story that couldn't have possibly happened in real life years ago, which is really what's so creepy and disturbing about it. If the pacing had been a bit faster, it would have been much more easy to watch, and alone was enough for me to drop it to 3 stars. The acting was fine (a good performance from Sean Bean as always), and it was obvious that it was made for reasons beyond simple entertainment value (it isn't the sort of movie you watch for creative death scenes). Set and costume designs were well done. All in all, I'd say it was a solid 3 stars.

By far one of the best dramatic political portrayals of Europe at the designated time. A must see.
