If you really liked Gladiator (Russell Crowe), I think that movie was inspired by this one! There are certain actors that were born to play certain movie roles and this was Anthony Quinn's! Jack Palance is a completely insane gladiator as well. It's a great story, in essence, could be considered "Historical Fiction" as it does seem to capture the time period. There are several stories-within-a-story things going on as well, like the Roman politician and his wife that want to work their way into the "glory of Rome" and were lucky enough to acquire Barabbas. The bottom line, it's a story of survival, accepting ones fate and the continual struggle with conscious.
