Big Bear is a refreshing take on a slap-stick comedy. Joey Kern’s directorial debut for Big Bear has definitely set the bar for his future works. This cinematography of this film experiments with a non linear plot and takes a dramatic approach, a convention not associated with traditional comedic styles. Big Bear is not your “typical dude movie”, you’ll be surprised to learn a thing or two about the true meaning of friendship.

Big Bear is the end of summer comedy I’ve been waiting for. Its humor is an interesting vodka-filled cocktail that’s equal parts Without a Paddle as it is Pulp Fiction. The movie takes place in the beautiful sunny mountains of Bear Bear Lake, California and the film reminds us with plenty of long sunset shots that make you dream of a summer home on its shore. Surprisingly for its bro-themed sheen, Big Bear has plenty of great shots, especially when exploring the ringing background noise that Joe’s life has become. The soul-crushing reality of Joe’s current predicament is perforated with lots of middle-aged wannabe fratboy antics that really drive the point home --Joe feels completely alone in the world. I think the movie managed to balance the comedy and surburban drama very well, well enough to keep you laughing and drinking, and often in quick succession. In short, I think it’s the best movie for taking your mind off the news station.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a comedy that makes me want to recommend it to everyone I know. When I saw Big Bear I knew it was going to be one of those movies you turn to anytime you’re feeling sad or need a good laugh. The movie takes place in Big Bear, CA where the scenic views take your breath away, and when you add comedy to these backdrops, you’re left with an amazing cinematic experience. In a movie about a guy going out for a wild night with his friends after being dumped by his fiancée for another man, I found myself in admiration of the great storytelling that Joey Kern brings the film through his role as director. The buddy comedy feel you get from this movie is refreshing and the acting from Adam Brody (The O.C.), Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black) and Joey Kern is comedic gold. I was shocked to see Pablo Schreiber playing such a different character from his role in Orange is the New Black, but his transition seemed effortless. I loved how the film was not only hilarious but had a fantastic story to go with it. I know this movie will remain one of my favorites for a long time and I can’t recommend it enough.
