About this movie

On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, the Canadian and American governments ask the CIA to intervene. The CIA turns to their top "exfiltration" specialist, Tony Mendez, to come up with a plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies. Good cast but really felt that this was giving lip service to the official story. All a bit sweetened and the tension was lost in the screenplay. The 'extended' version on the DVD felt like a cut down. The characters were just low level nobody's and played those parts were played with a grey accuracy that left us not really caring what happened to any of them. The usual underlying broken home back story was lazily developed and could have been cut and pasted from a dozen other films. Its Oscar win for best picture was in line with previous winners, rarely does the winner deserve such an accolade. This one of the more extreme examples.

Never did I think of Ben Affleck as a director, how wrong was I. Incredibly well written, tense at times but very, very enjoyable. Strong cast and based on a true story, well worth watching. The only reason that it did not get 5 stars was simple personal preference. It simply did not contain enough action for my taste, but perhaps it did not require it, regardless, it was a well constructed piece.

Honestly the movie is well made but its a bit dodgy. If you don't know Iran and you don't care you'll like it. But for me it had a lot of false details, like saying hi instead of buy in Farsi, which made me think the writers couldn't be asked to research a bit more.
