Antz is the first Dreamworks animated movie. Is it a cartoon with the quality as strong as 5 ants? No. Is it a cartoon with a pest-like reputation that needs to be stepped on? No. This film shows a great example of teamwork, and what's really amusing about it is that the ants do teamwork in an animated way, like climbing, making a ladder, and making a wrecking ball that looks similar to the wrecking crane. the film has good storytelling; it is smarter than average but easy to follow at the same time, it has a sense of adventure and the story delivers inspiring messages about good teamwork for the good miracles of benefits in a non-villainous manner, and caring for others. The ant characters are well-voiced and the voice acting is really well directed. The animation is not a masterpiece of animation, because the ants can be seen as a little uncanny with cartoony human-like designs. The film's setting is very imaginative; the movie sucks you into the world of ants from underground and on the ground, when you are the size of an ant, everything looks gargantuan. The music score is quirky and creative, but the best parts of the score is the bold action and emotional elements, because each music cue for those bits really packs a punch and has the spice to make these music cues engaging and make your eyes open wide. My problems that I have for this film is that the comedy is not hilarious because the energy of the film is at an average level. Now, I do love for the fact that the movie has a laid-back mature tone for a family film for children, but the tone is a little more mature than most other children's films. if you have an animated film with an overly calm and mature tone, than the movie would come across as boring. The comedy is sharp enough to get some chuckles because of the direction of the tone where it gets comical at times and the physical elements of comedy, like lightning fast hits and one moment of slapstick in the face. Another problem I have is that, just like the whole enterprise, the characters are just plain, there is nothing to them, well there is some information about the characters and we know what their goals are, it is a somewhat strong effort, but that effort barely succeeds. This animated movie is suitable for kids ages 9 and up due to mild language and menacing action. This film is a decently fine choice for families with children. Recommended.
