About this movie

A passionate tale of love and liberation set amidst the conservative confines of modern Georgian society, AND THEN WE DANCED follows Merab, a devoted dancer who has been training for years with his partner Mary for a spot in the National Georgian Ensemble. The arrival of another male dancer, Irakli-gifted with perfect form and equipped with a rebellious streak-throws Merab off balance, sparking both an intense rivalry and romantic desire that may cause him to risk his future in dance as well as his relationships with Mary and his family.

At first glance, the film may seem like just another LGBTQA selection. However, the movie's production and distribution caused much controversy and backlash in the conservative country in which it was filmed, Georgia. Overall, I felt that the acting, choreography, lighting, and soundtrack were strong in the film. On the flip hand, I thought that the movie was slow in some parts and fell into the trap of being melancholy. As to the latter, I was still surprised and pleased by the ending!

Finally. A film filmed in this tiny country that my friend wanted to visit. After reading about how conservative it was, I did not end up visiting. Now with this film, I fell in love with the characters and the visual aesthetic aspect of the film that I would definitely consider visiting.
