About this movie

Woody Allen's romantic comedy A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK tells the story of college sweethearts, Gatsby (Timothée Chalamet) and Ashleigh (Elle Fanning), whose plans for a romantic weekend together in New York City are dashed as quickly as the sunlight turns into showers. The two are soon parted, and each has a series of chance meetings and comical adventures while on their own.

This is, in fact, a rather stupid film--for various reasons. Nothing really happens in the film. It's more like a vehicle for Allen to hang lines on--dialog. Does that make sense? You could remove ALL the credits and it would still be so patently obvious that Woody Allen wrote it. Speaking of lines, the two leads have poor timing. One is constantly reminded that this is a SCRIPT because Fanning and Chalamet don't have (IMO) the acting chops required to pull it all off. The timing is just sooooooooo poor. It's like watching 2 actors read lines separately and then trying to imagine a poor editor somewhere attempting to string it all together. I felt it was a waste of my time and money, and BARELY rises to the level of art.

This movie is a love letter to New York City locations with a character that almost seems like Woody Allen himself. Timothee Chalamet embodies the mannerisms of a young Woody Allen almost to a tee. This movie is not deep by any means but it covers the mushy love stories of these characters only a Woody Allen film can do. Like his other movies especially Scoop and Match Point this is a lighter version of these two films combine. If you are looking for a far fetch Woody Allen romantic film, then this is the film for you. Elle Fanning hits this move out of the park and is the one of the best things about this movie.

A refreshing and a humane, down to earth New York City story (down to earth in a New York way). Pleasantly surprised that the movie is not peppered with Woody Allen's typical sickly complexes. On the contrary, Allen masterfully baked the essence of New York into the narrative in an unexpectedly naïve, "clean" and mischievous manner; which, in my opinion, created one of the best pictures that conveys the spirit of the city.
