A Hidden Life

A beautiful film, perfectly cast, impeccably acted... it takes you straight back to a terrible time and two people caught in a huge storm. And yet they prevailed.

Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life is three hours long but the ones who haven’t had the chance to see the film in a cinema could easily split the experience and watch it at home in two or three parts. It remains an absorbing and rewarding experience. It’s a deeply spiritual film about faith, a near religious experience and a superbly crafted piece of filmmaking. It’s about a man who simply can’t do what he believes is wrong. Taken away from an idyllic life in the heart of the Austrian Alps, he thinks it’s better to suffer injustice than to do it. What's remarkable is the style of filmmaking used to tell that story. Beautifully shot (again) by Emmanuel Lubezki (The Tree of Life, Gravity…), it’s as if the film was written with the camera. With Terrence Malick more than with any other director, cinema is a written language. After Badlands (1973), Days of Heaven (1978) and The Thin Red Line (1998) – but not necessarily the divisive Tree of Life – this is another masterpiece by the cult filmmaker. Highly recommended.

Great movie,quite a long one three hours,in my opinion this was to try and convey the agony that the couple went through.It was day in and out .Never ending no escape.Franz the Austrian farmer was absolute in his strong beliefs and would not pledge loyalty to hitler.He could have done so and possibly returned to his loving loyal wife and three beautiful children. His belief would not allow him to.Blessed are the peace makers .what a man .his family can stand very tall.
