About this movie

Inspired by the award-winning short film of the same name, “1985” follows Adrian (Cory Michael Smith, “Gotham”), a closeted young man returning to his Texas hometown for Christmas during the first wave of the AIDS crisis. Burdened with an unspeakable tragedy in New York, Adrian reconnects with his brother (Aidan Langford) and estranged childhood friend (Jamie Chung), as he struggles to divulge his dire circumstances to his religious parents (Virginia Madsen and Michael Chiklis).

i saw this movie at the LGBT film festival in San Francisco and it blew me away. Having lived through this period at about the age of the protagonist, the film beautifully and heartbreakingly captures the tension between having a community of support in the big city and harboring a painful secret kept from family in the little home town -- longing for the support family might provide but realizing it is out of reach.

The movie wasn't perfect but neither were the early years of the AIDS epidemic. Kids were abandoned and disowned by parents, siblings and friends. Let to die alone from a GAY sexually transmitted disease. The movie trys to show the difficulty these kids faced when diagnosed as well as their parents learning they were gay at the same time. A double whammy!
