George Lopez, Seasons 1 & 2

When well-liked George becomes the first guy to be promoted from the assembly line to plant manager at a Los Angeles airplane parts factory, his life becomes a little more complicated. His pal Ernie and former compadres on the plant floor tease him about joining management. George's first test in the new position is to terminate one employee. He must choose either his acerbic line-inspector mother, Benny, or Ernie. George's hardworking and patient wife, Angie, copes with Benny's constant wisecracks and cares for the couple's kids, precocious 9-year-old Max and 13-year-old Carmen, who is dealing with the traumas of being a teenager.

George worries about Carmen when she brings a boy, Duncan (Jonathan Jones), home for the first time. He persuades Max to spy on them, but despite finding no impropriety, George threatens Duncan, embarrassing Carmen. Later, George replies to instant messages on Carmen's computer, pretending to be her. Although this infuriates both Carmen and Angie when they find out, George then goes to a party and further humiliates Carmen with his overprotectiveness. Finally, Carmen sadly ends the relationship with Duncan, not because of her father, but because Duncan tried to pressure her into having sex too soon. Carmen forgives George, who realizes that she is more responsible than he thought.

Angie plans a long-overdue surprise birthday party for George, despite his dislike for such celebrations. Meanwhile, when an accident-prone worker, Amy (Sandra Bullock - "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood," "Speed"), returns to the factory after a medical leave of absence, her clumsiness threatens George's coveted safety record.

When a factory employee, Jim (Gregg Daniel), is arrested because of a bar fight, George and Benny audition people to replace him in their carpool. Meanwhile, Max wants to walk to school alone for the first time, prompting overprotective George to test his son's savvy. Max proves that he is smart, but George gets into trouble with the police.

After Max idolizes Angie's father, George concocts a false story about how wonderful his own father (Esai Morales) was. The reality is that George never knew his father--Benny always told him the man had died. But when George meets his estranged aunt in the supermarket, he learns that his father left the family shortly after George was born and is still alive somewhere. Benny reluctantly admits the truth but assures George that his father was an unfeeling man. However, George discovers an old photograph of his father cradling him gently and becomes determined to find him. Meanwhile, Angie pities a stray dog and brings him home. But she isn't prepared for all the care the sick animal requires.

George questions his company loyalty. After his bosses ask him to help on the assembly line, which is humiliating because it is the duty he performed before his promotion to manager, he receives a job offer from a competitor. Meanwhile, Carmen has to choose whether she wants to keep her best friend or be part of the popular crowd.

When Max performs poorly in school, one of his teachers suspects that he has a learning disability. Angie wants to place Max in special classes, but George objects because he is afraid that the other children will mock Max. But when George ponders his own upbringing, he comes to a different realization. Meanwhile, Ernie moves in with the Lopez family after arguing with his mother.

George prepares the house for Halloween, his favorite holiday, while dealing with the stress of hiring an assembly line worker whose life is a disaster. Meanwhile, Angie helps Carmen get accepted on the cheerleading squad in an effort to help her become more popular--but Carmen's not the kind of girl Angie was in high school.

When Max is asked to not play in an upcoming Little League game because he can't hit the ball, George works tirelessly on improving his son's skills. But it takes a special visit from some of baseball's premier players (Rod Carew, Steve Garvey, Joe Morgan and Jim Palmer as themselves) to teach George that there's more to playing well than he thinks.

George must help sell chocolate bars to fund Max's school trip to Florida's Cape Canaveral--but the effort doesn't quite go according to plan. Also, George and Angie find out that accident-prone factory worker Amy Kirkland ("George Lopez" executive producer Sandra Bullock ("Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood," "Speed") in a recurring guest-starring role) is a parent as well. Meanwhile, Carmen gives her grandmother, Benny, a fashion makeover when Benny becomes enamored with a fellow employee.

The Lopezes host a wedding in their backyard. For the first time in their 16-year marriage, George asks a delighted Angie to slow dance with him, which she has always wanted to do. But he gets more than he expected when she drunkenly invents some new dance moves as the party guests look on.

With Carmen physically maturing, George and Angie hesitantly teach their astute daughter about boys and sex. But when Carmen secretly begins dating her classmate, her parents realize that more drastic measures are necessary.

After learning that his mother, Benny, had sex with a co-worker 35 years ago, George believes he has finally found his father. He meets the man, Lalo (Cheech Marin - "Spy Kids")--whose picture bears a striking resemblance to George--and invites him for Thanksgiving dinner. However, George's familial bond is tested when he discovers the truth.

When Angie realizes that she has free time after helping her family with everyday chores, she volunteers with a variety of charities. Feeling fulfilled, she soon finds herself joining more organizations than she can cope with, and George and the family must help her understand that they need and appreciate her too.

When Angie's parents, Vic (Emiliano Díez) and Emilina (Sonia Braga - "American Family," "Kiss of the Spider Woman"), visit for Christmas, George thinks they still believe that he is not good enough for their daughter. But he shows he can take care of his family without their help and battles with Vic for the best Christmas ever.

George's mother, Benny, has always seemed ungrateful, no matter what George does for her. So when Benny's shower drain becomes clogged, he refuses to fix it. However, when Benny disrupts George's bathroom schedule by using the other shower, he is forced to take action. With help from Ernie and Max, George attempts to fix and remodel Benny's decrepit bathroom--and vainly hopes for a simple "thank you" from his mother.

The Lopez family finds out that Benny's estranged brother, Uncle Joe (Ismael 'East' Carlo), will die soon. George and Angie convince Benny to reconcile with Uncle Joe--but Benny's more interested in getting Joe's Super Bowl tickets. Meanwhile, since Benny never taught George how to cope with death when he was younger, he has difficulty attending the funeral.

After George gives Angie a disappointing gift for Valentine's Day, she recalls their high school days in the 1980s, when George painted a great mural of her for the holiday. However, when Angie takes the entire family to look at the mural--and finds out it will soon be removed--the truth of the mural's origins is revealed.

After Carmen ends her relationship with her classmate, Adam (Jordan Masterson), he tries to ruin her reputation at school. George and Angie want to repair the damage, but the school counselor, Tommy (Steven R. Schirripa - "The Sopranos"), who knew George when they were kids, refuses to right the wrong--prompting Carmen to take action in her own defense.

When Carmen is accepted to a private school, George and Angie decide to take a bank loan to pay for the tuition. They receive a bad credit report that reveals more on the history of George's father, and George learns he has a half-brother--also named George (Lou Diamond Phillips - "Courage Under Fire").

As a surprise for Angie's birthday, George arranges for her father, Vic (recurring guest star Emiliano Díez), and sister, Gloria (Jacqueline Obradors - "NYPD Blue"), to visit for the celebration. Upset about her upcoming divorce and jealous of her sister's marriage to a good man, Gloria makes an inappropriate advance towards George--which Max witnesses.

The airplane parts factory where George works is under consideration by the federal government for more business. Afraid that a certain employee's ethnic background will hinder the company's chances of getting the contract, George's boss orders him to demote the worker. George must decide whether or not to jeopardize his career by being ethical.

When Benny learns that George's father, who left her years ago to care for George alone, is now wealthy, she decides that she deserves to get rich herself. After getting drunk on her lunch hour, she falls down on work premises, pretends to be hurt and hires a lawyer to sue the company. George begs his mother not to be dishonest. Meanwhile, Benny continues her rivalry with co-worker Gina (recurring guest star Elmarie Wendel).

After giving a young ex-gang member, Marisol (recurring guest star Tonantzin Esparza), a job at the factory and a chance for a new life, George is shocked when Angie takes further pity on Marisol and allows her to live in the Lopez home instead of with her abusive boyfriend. But after impressionable Carmen becomes intrigued with Marisol's lifestyle, even Angie must admit that she may have made a mistake. Meanwhile, Max joins a scouting troop and develops some disturbing new habits.

Carmen's first day at her new school causes trouble in the family. When George overreacts with concern for Carmen's safety, it appears that he doesn't trust her. Meanwhile, Max becomes enamored with a much older woman--Carmen's new high school friend.

George must hide his concern--and disapproval--when Ernie is promoted to team leader at work. Meanwhile, a cosmetics saleswoman, Stephanie (Hilary Duff - "Lizzie McGuire"), who is training Angie, encourages her to lie to potential clients.

When George and Angie get into major financial trouble, Benny secretly asks Lydia (guest star Cristina - host of the Spanish-language talk show "El Show de Cristina"), the second wife of George's estranged father, for help. Meanwhile, George does his best to obtain extra money--leading him to encounter some disreputable characters.

After George's estranged father gives him a huge loan to save the family from financial ruin, George vows to visit him in Phoenix. But George's difficult personal journey becomes a family vacation when Angie insists on joining him with Benny and Max. Along the way, George reminisces about his upbringing. Meanwhile, Ernie might finally have some success with women. The band WAR performs.
