Poldark, Series 1-5 Boxset

Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) joins the army to avoid charges of smuggling, leaving behind his sweetheart, Elizabeth (Heida Reed), with the promise that he will return soon.

When local mine Wheal Reath is closed violently by bailiffs, hundreds of miners find themselves out of work and desperately poor.

Wheal Leisure is opened, but immediately hits ironstone that will require additional funds for gunpowder. At the mine, Zacky confides in Ross that his daughter Jinny is pregnant by Jim. Ross offers the young couple one of his cottages free of rent, so that Jim and Jinny can marry.

The news of Ross and Demelza’s marriage shocks Trenwith and Charles' amusement at the thought brings on a fatal heart attack. On his death-bed, he asks Ross to look after Francis who is drinking, gaming and whoring his family’s money away.

Ross and Demelza welcome two new arrivals: Dwight Enys (Luke Norris), a doctor who plans to make a study of lung diseases at Wheal Leisure and their own baby daughter, Julia Grace Poldark.

The Carnmore smelting company is a success and Ross makes more of an enemy of George by outbidding him for copper at auction. Meanwhile, Francis is increasingly volatile now that he has lost his mine and is reduced to working the land, so Verity avoids speaking to him about her plans to marry Captain Blamey.

Ross is struggling to keep the Carnmore smelting company afloat, now that George is determined to crush it. George’s agents are outbidding Carnmore in order to starve it of copper and George is trying to find ways to get to its shareholders, who all remain secret except Ross.

Ross tries one last time to turn around the fortunes of Carnmore, but after they are outbid he reluctantly folds the company. George has won and takes the opportunity to rub Ross’ face in it, showing off his new ship, the Queen Charlotte, and inviting Matthew Sanson to return.

The global smash hit of 2015 returns for a second series. In the first of ten episodes, returning home following his arrest in the finale of series one, Ross Poldark faces a new fight for freedom. He prepares for his trial as Demelza and Elizabeth try to help his cause, but George Warleggan does everything in his power to harm him. Meanwhile, Ross's cousin Francis wrestles with his conscience, and Dwight clashes with an entitled heiress, Caroline Penvenen.

As the election leads to rioting, Elizabeth goes to Bodmin herself. Demelza tries to influence the case by making a personal appeal to the judge, but George Warleggan has a number of tricks up his sleeve as the day of the trial arrives.

Ross and Demelza face financial ruin, and George plots revenge on Jud. Meanwhile, Francis tries to rebuild his life and extends an invitation to Ross and Demelza.

Needing money to open a mine free of George's influence, Ross strikes a deal with a local smuggler. Meanwhile, Dwight tries to diagnose an epidemic and receives help from an anonymous benefactor.

An informant in the smuggling ring poses a serious threat to all, and George buys Ross's debt to finally crush him. Meanwhile, Caroline returns to Cornwall to make an announcement, but it is Elizabeth who reveals a great secret.

In the wake of Francis's death, Ross tries to financially support Elizabeth, but George calls in Ross's debt. Demelza toils loyally to protect all at Nampara, and Dwight and Caroline continue to meet in secret.

Ross joins a smuggling trip in the Isles of Scilly in order to meet Mark Daniel, but in his absence, George moves in on Elizabeth. Captain McNeil plans to ambush the smugglers on their return. Meanwhile, Caroline convinces Dwight that they must elope for a new life in Bath.

Ross and Dwight stand trial for their part in the smuggling. A new tin lode gives Ross renewed hope in Wheal Grace, but it is George who is there for Elizabeth when her mother falls ill and deals Ross a bitter blow.

Ross closes Wheal Grace for good. With Elizabeth wrestling with a life changing decision, Demelza’s world has been turned upside down. How will harmony be restored?

Dwight enlists in the navy to forget Caroline and Demelza visits Verity to spend some time apart from Ross. While Ross considers re-joining his regiment, Elizabeth and George settle in to married life, but George’s plans provoke the locals to riot...

Ross and Demelza look to forget the past and rebuild their marriage, but new arrivals threaten their fragile reconciliation.

Sam and Drake provoke Trenwith and Ross's stubbornness gives George the upper hand. Meanwhile, a great naval battle leaves Dwight's fate in question.

Ross attempts to learn of Dwight's fate in Revolutionary France. Meanwhile, in Cornwall, George and Elizabeth lock horns with Sam and Drake.

George proves merciless as the new magistrate and Clowance is christened. Ross discovers the means to help Dwight and to combat Cornwall's famine.

While George makes political manoeuvres at home, Ross sails to France to rescue Dwight from the French Revolution.

Drake finds himself in the firing line of the Warleggans as George moves to secure his connection to the nobility and Ross provides some local aid.

George pursues a vacant seat in Parliament as Agatha plans for her 100th birthday and Ross is given a proposition. Meanwhile, there is a new arrival at the Whitworth vicarage.

An election threatens Truro's status quo and as his past actions confront him, Ross senses a rival for Demelza's affection.

Cornwall is put on alert after Prudie and Tholly spy French sails on the horizon. Danger lies ahead for Drake. Rowella has news for Osbourne. Demelza learns an unwelcome truth and goes behind Ross's back.

As the Poldarks look to rebuild their marriage and the Enyses to increase their family, Cornwall struggles under the Warleggans, whose power threatens all they hold dear.

Cornwall’s election looms and the Poldarks face difficult decisions for the outcomes could change not only their lives, but the future of Cornwall itself.

Ross must rise to the challenge of Parliament, but the distance from Cornwall brings trials of its own as George, refusing to accept defeat, begins stacking the odds in his favour.

While George furthers his return to Westminster, Ross is reunited with his family at home. Tragedy strikes in Cornwall however, forcing him from the quiet life into action again.

George increases the strain on the struggling poor, driving Ross to make a risky gambit. The adversity the Poldarks face, however, may not be confined to Cornwall alone...

As Dwight helps in the founding of Truro’s infirmary, George finds the opportunity to ruin a business rival and the Poldarks too in the process.

The Warleggan’s domestic bliss comes under threat and as Morwenna takes fate into her own hands, the Poldark’s vacation has deadly complications.

Demelza helps Morwenna and Drake build a future, but as Ross and Elizabeth try to repair their own marriages in Cornwall, their houses clash as the feud is renewed.

The Poldarks' peaceful life in Cornwall is disrupted by a plea for help from Ross' old comrade, Ned Despard, drawing them into a world of duplicity.

Demelza joins Ross in London with the children as Ross realises his mission to help Ned has entangled them in a dangerous web.

Grain prices and food shortages prolong local suffering in Cornwall. Demelza wonders how to give the people means to help themselves as Ross' doggedness in helping Ned bears fruit, but comes at a perilous cost.

Ross returns to a starving Cornwall with hope for Ned but finds Ralph returning with Cecily too. While Cecily and Geoffrey Charles meet in secret, George's delusions continue and Dwight is called to attend him.

George's cabal move to ruin the Poldarks, and Morwenna wrestles a heavy decision.

Demelza uncovers a betrayal and the young lovers take flight for a future together.

Ross discovers a French plot and George finds himself at the mercy of Joseph and Ralph.
