It all gets a bit out of hand when he is propositioned by a very attractive woman. Karen's approaching birthday leaves David determined to find the perfect present. The acquisition of it leads the gang to Chester, but unfortunately for David the setting only gives Karen and Mark's relationship new footing. Pete and Jo are becoming closer and closer, yet burgeoning feelings are hindered by the existence of Jo's boyfriend, Suggs.

Adam is amazed to see how big Rachel has become while she's been away. They disagree over the baby's name and Rachel is hurt by Adam's sudden loss of interest in sex. Karen embarks on a full-blooded affair with Mark. She's in love with him and cannot put a stop to their burgeoning relationship. David is consumed with work, having been handed an unfortunate task. Pete and Jo finally get together, but there is one problem - sex. Both are anxious about consummating the relationship. Then Jo receives a blow - her visa has expired and she is expected to return to Australia.

The gang heads for Australia to attend Pete and Jo's wedding. Rachel is particularly excited about the trip as it will be the first time she's seen her Sydney-based younger sister in a long time. David is determined to give Karen the holiday of a lifetime. He hopes this will seal their apparent reconciliation once and for all. Karen sees the holiday in very different terms - Mark's pushing her to leave David and the time has come for her to make a choice. Adam has his own agenda - he's convinced Pete's making a big mistake and intends to put a stop to the wedding. His determination is matched by that of Jo's father Rod who is convinced that Pete's after only one thing - his money.

Mark returns on the scene. Ramona falls for swim instructor Lee and David agrees to pay for her membership of the health club in order to receive information about Karen. Ramona is caught in the middle. Pete's mum can't sleep and Jo introduces her to marijuana.

At the naming ceremony of Matthew Adam tells everyone he finds it hard to love the baby. He and Rachel have a heart to heart. Furious that Karen is seeing Mark again, David instructs his lawyer to fight the divorce. Karen instructs her lawyer to seek sole residence for the children. Ramona is playing hard to get with Lee. Pete and Jo are interviewed by the Immigration Department to confirm the legitimacy of their marriage. Doubts come into Pete's head about Jo's real reason for getting married. Adam is made redundant so Rachel goes back to work. David goes for dinner with his lawyer they end up in bed.

David continues to see his lawyer. Karen is furious when he stops her credit card. She goes away for the night with Mark but has to return when Josh has a minor accident. Mark finds it hard to accept the children. Adam finds it hard being a house husband and is jealous when Rachel tells him she has to go away on business. He has an interview for a job and is happy to return to work. At a meeting with the lawyers, David's lawyer brings up Karen's alcoholism David is furious. Adam and Rachel are shocked to learn that their house is up for auction and financially out of their reach. Lee spends the night with Ramona.

Unable to afford to buy their house Adam and Rachel go house hunting. Rachel doesn't like any. Adam's father turns up out of the blue. Rachel admits to Adam that she wrote to him after the birth of Matthew. Jo goes away with work for the weekend and ends up in a situation with Lee which she confesses to Karen. Karen is shocked to learn of David's affair with Robyn. Adam finally makes it up with his father. Ramona moves in with Lee.

Adam's father offers to help Adam and Rachel buy their house. Both Adam and Rachel rush to get to the auction and tragedy strikes. Rachel is in a car accident. The friends all spend the night at the hospital. Adam's father returns to Ireland. Lee proposes to Ramona.

Karen finds it hard to cope without Rachel and seeks grief counselling. David also comforts her. She hints to Ramona that Lee might be unfaithful and Ramona discovers Jo slept with him. Ramona punches Jo so Pete finds out. Adam asks everyone to join him to scatter Rachel's ashes at Portmeirion, a special place for her and Adam. Jenny comforts both Adam and Pete. David has to decide on the two women in his life - Karen or Robyn?
