Lewis and Hathaway are brought in to investigate the murder of Marina Hartner, found brutally murdered near the river bank with what seemingly was an antique mirror with a bloodstained note.

A theatre actor is found murdered backstage with a prop knife sticking from his chest. A note is found by the body, which Hathaway identifies as a quote from Hamlet.

Lewis and Hathaway are called in to investigate the death of a man found beaten and drowned in his bath. By the body, they discover a postcard bearing a cryptic message.

Lewis and Hathaway meet the lead singer of a old rock band, believed to be dead for decades. The body of a teenage boy, run over by a vehicle, points to a connection with members of the band.

After the body of Dr Stephen Black is found on an Oxford tour bus, Lewis and Hathaway are lead to Crevecoeur Hall, a sprawling Oxford estate where Hathaway spent much of his childhood.

Lewis and Hathaway are called to the Oxford University Observatory where the body of an amateur stargazer and Master of Gresham College, has been found at the foot of the stairs under suspicious circumstances.
