Vera Drake
Vera Drake is a devoted, working-class mother in 1950s London who is both beloved and admired by everyone who surrounds her. Yet she bares a secret that few people know about, she induces miscarriages for women who do not wish to bare children. To her, it is a mission of kindness, of charity, of love. But when a miscarriage goes horribly wrong, Vera has to face the authorities, sending her life into tragedy. From acclaimed director Mike Leigh, Vera Drake stars Imelda Staunton in a career defining performance for which Newsday raved, "…the kind of role that elevates an actress into a lofty realm where those who never knew her suddenly knew it all along."
