Overweight, repressed housewife Evelyn Couch is befriended by quirky octogenarian Ninny Threadgoode while visiting a cantankerous aunt in an convalescent home in Birmingham, Alabama and listening to Ninny's tales about her nearby home town, Whistle Stop.
