In many ways, the muted reception of La Pointe Courte upon its non-release in 1955 doomed it to the footnotes of the pages of history. In fact, Varda's film was the first flowering of the realist movement in French filmmaking that gave birth to the New Wave only a few years later. Varda, who at the time was a gifted if unknown documentary photographer in her mid-20s, wryly claimed that she wanted to make the cinematic equivalent of a difficult book. Varda’s drive to forge her own cinematic forms make this one of the most startling debuts of all time.
