A delinquent named Yusuke Urameshi dies and becomes a ghost. But according to Botan, a Spirit World guide, there is a chance he can come back to life.
Yusuke is tasked with hatching an egg in the Spirit World. He asks his childhood friend Keiko to keep his body from being cremated before he returns.
Having trouble dealing with Kuwabara and his gang, Mr. Akashi makes them promise to stop fighting for a week and to pass their upcoming exam.
Keiko busies herself with looking after Yusuke's body. When an arsonist sets Yusuke's apartment ablaze, Keiko runs straight into the fire to save him.
Keiko brings Yusuke back to life by giving him some of her own life energy. For his next trial, Koenma appoints Yusuke to become a Spirit Detective.
Yusuke must recover three stolen artifacts in his first job as Spirit Detective. One of the thieves demonstrates his power in a fight against Yusuke.
Yusuke meets Kurama, who shows no interest in fighting him. Instead, Kurama claims to want to save the woman who raised him as a human boy.
Keiko is kidnapped by Hiei, the last of the thieves Yusuke has to deal with. Yusuke fights to rescue Keiko, but Hiei's powers put him in a bind.
Yusuke bumps into Kuwabara at a temple after receiving orders to protect the fighting techniques of a master named Genkai from the demon Rando.
The contestants must fight in darkness for their next trial. Kuwabara uses his spirit energy to form a sword against a swordsman named Musashi.
Yusuke uses Genkai's discarded cigarette during his fight against Kibano. While still unsure of who Rando could be, Yusuke takes on Kazemaru.
The match between Shorin and Kuwabara begins. Kuwabara appears to have the upper hand at first, but Shorin starts to recite a stolen incantation.
Yusuke fights to avenge Kuwabara, but Rando is a formidable foe. Just as Yusuke starts to give up on trying to win, he hears Kuwabara ridiculing him.
The four Saint Beasts demand to live in the Human World. Yusuke and Kuwabara go to the Demon World to destroy the whistle that controls Makai insects.
Yusuke and the others encounter Genbu after making it through the Gate of Betrayal. Kurama volunteers to take the powerful Saint Beast on by himself.
Kuwabara steps up to fight the next Saint Beast with his improved Spirit Sword skills, but Byakko creates four monsters to deal with him instead.
Kuwabara fights to overcome his foe's ability to absorb his spirit energy. Byakko uses his fearsome powers to drive Kuwabara into a corner.
Seiryu angers Yusuke and the others with a merciless act of cruelty. Feeling new emotions stirring inside him, Hiei challenges Seiryu to combat.

Try as he might, Yusuke struggles to keep up against multiple Suzakus. As Suzaku moves to finish him off, Yusuke remembers something from his past.
Yusuke puts his life on the line for a final counterattack and squeezes out every ounce of his strength to deliver Keiko from the hands of evil.
Yusuke must rescue a girl named Yukina from a wealthy man named Tarukane. Kuwabara falls in love at first sight and accompanies Yusuke on his mission.

Yusuke and Kuwabara face the Triad. Tarukane starts to feel flustered as he watches the boys' progress with the secret society members of the BBC.
Yusuke and Kuwabara struggle against the Toguro brothers despite their valiant efforts. Hiei infiltrates the mansion in search of Yukina.
Younger Toguro reappears before Yusuke. In order to stand a chance against him at the Dark Tournament, Yusuke starts training under Genkai again.
Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei and the masked fighter must survive the preliminary round aboard the ship that will take them to the Dark Tournament.
Keiko, Koenma and the others arrive to watch the Dark Tournament. While Yusuke remains fast asleep, Kuwabara struggles against a fighter named Rinku.
Kurama takes on Roto after the end of Kuwabara and Rinku's fight. Roto earns Kurama's wrathful vengeance by taking his mother hostage.
The battle between Hiei and the pyromancer Zeru begins. Hiei decides to use a technique he has yet to master against his formidable opponent.
Yusuke wakes up in time to face the strange, drunk Chu. As the two team leaders clash, it becomes clear that Chu is more skilled than he appears.
Both Yusuke and Chu have spent all their energy. In order to finish the fight, Yusuke accepts Chu's proposal of engaging in hand-to-hand combat.
Team Urameshi will be advancing to the second round, but their powers are spent and depleted. Team Toguro demonstrates their overwhelming strength.
The second round is about to start, but Hiei and Kurama are nowhere to be found. Yusuke, Kuwabara and the masked fighter start without them.
Yusuke and Kuwabara get in trouble by sympathizing with their opponents. The masked fighter loses her disguise after saving her two teammates.
The masked fighter defeats Dr. Ichigaki's killing machines. As Yusuke and the others react in anger, Dr. Ichigaki transforms before their eyes.
After Yusuke and the others make it to the third round, Hiei and the masked fighter get tricked and trapped inside a force field.
Toya unleashes his ice attacks after vowing to avenge his teammate. With his powers sealed, Kurama is forced into making a desperate move.
Bakken ruthlessly beats Kurama even though his opponent is exhausted from his previous fight. Furious, Yusuke finally climbs into the ring.
Yusuke does his best to fight against Jin, but he is forced to take a different approach when his flying opponent counters even his Spirit Gun.
The tournament committee changes the ruling on the outcome of Jin and Yusuke's fight. Kuwabara gets up to save Team Urameshi from losing the round.
Using what little power he has left in his body, Kuwabara takes on the opposing team leader in a battle he has a slim chance of winning.
Yusuke has built up confidence from having survived and won numerous battles, but the masked fighter scolds him for getting cocky.
The Dark Tournament semi-finals begin. Yusuke receives his ultimate and final test as the rest of Team Urashima starts fighting against Team Uraotogi.
Hiei chooses to fight back-to-back after defeating his first opponent, but he struggles against Kuro Momotaro without the full use of his powers.
Kuro Momotaro presents Hiei with one challenge after another with his ability to transform. The fight between Kurama and Ura Urashima begins.
Kurama gets his old powers back and overwhelms Ura Urashima with his vastly superior might. Frightened, Ura Urashima starts to reveal his secrets.
Genkai heads to the tournament grounds by herself. Kuwabara gets teleported to a different location during his fight against Shishiwakamaru.
Genkai takes on Shishiwakamaru despite having very little spirit power left. During the difficult battle, Genkai remembers a certain technique.
Kuwabara finally makes it back to the arena, but the enemy team captain Onji transports him away again. Genkai sees through Onji's disguise.
Team Toguro shows up for the semi-finals without the Younger Toguro, but the remaining three are strong enough to take on their opponents with ease.
Genkai faces off against an old friend. Using what little power she has left from her previous battles, Genkai fights for what she believes is right.
"Beautiful Suzuki" appears before Kurama and Kuwabara to hand each of them an item. As Yusuke deals with loss, Koenma comes to give him a message.
Team Urameshi makes it to the final round, but the rules state that each team must have five fighters; unexpected people fill the teams' vacant slots.
In the first fight, Kurama faces an opponent who can create demon energy bombs. Kurama uses the potion Suzuki gave him in order to transform.
Karasu comes back from the brink of defeat and unleashes his true powers. In a complete role reversal, Kurama reverts back to his regular self.
Next up is the fight between Hiei and Bui. Hiei dodges his opponent's giant ax with ease. Acknowledging Hiei's abilities, Bui takes off his armor.
Hiei unleashes his dark dragon against his opponent. As the battle reaches its climax, Bui counters Hiei's attack with his massive battle aura.
Kuwabara gets a very bad feeling about fighting the Elder Toguro. To shake off his anxiety, Kuwabara moves to strike first with Suzuki's trial sword.
Kuwabara morphs his Spirit Sword into a paddle shape to smack down his immortal opponent. Yusuke finally faces off against the Younger Toguro.
The decisive final battle begins with Toguro at 80 percent power. In the middle of the lighting fast action, Yusuke shoots a potent Spirit Gun blast.
Seeing no other way to win, Yusuke removes the spirit cuffs Genkai put on him. Yusuke gains the upper hand, but Toguro reveals his full potential.
Yusuke is overwhelmed. Toguro thinks of a horrific way he can make Yusuke more powerful in order to fulfil his desire to fight someone at his level.
A new power emerges from within Yusuke after the tragedy. Channeling the anger he feels toward himself and Toguro, Yusuke fights with all his might.
The Dark Tournament comes to an end. Koenma and Sakyo settle their bet; the loser tries to destroy the dome along with his own life.
Koenma returns to the Spirit World and holds a meeting with Toguro to determine his punishment, but Toguro has already made up his own mind.
As Yusuke and his friends settle back to their normal lives after the Dark Tournament, Koenma mulls over a strange case unfolding in the Human World.
Kuwabara and the others find Kurama's classmate Kaito when they arrive at the specified location to save Yusuke from the students with strange powers.
One by one, Hiei, Kuwabara and Botan fall victim to the taboo word. Being the last one left, Kurama suggests a deal to settle matters with Kaito.
Kurama and the others head deeper into the mansion. After taking on Yanagisawa's challenge, they meet the mastermind behind the entire ordeal.
Genkai and Koenma reveal the frighting state of affairs: Someone is trying to open a tunnel that would connect the Human World and the Demon World.
Yusuke and the others meet a mind reader named Murota when they head to Mushiyori City to find who is trying to open the tunnel to the Demon World.
Murota is taken to a hospital where the psychic "Doctor" Kamiya resides. Many collapse as strange insects spread a virus throughout the hospital.
Kamiya feels no pain and will not faint for his territory to be deactivated. Yusuke struggles with how he should deal with Kamiya since he is human.
As the Demon World hole grows bigger, Kuwabara decides to go off on his own without Yusuke. A new foe called Seaman attacks Kuwabara and his friends.
Seaman continues to attack Kuwabara as he tries to save his friends. New powers awaken inside Kuwabara when he is swallowed up by Seaman's creature.
Yusuke and the others learn more about Sensui's past when Koenma visits the Human World to talk to them about the former Spirit Detective.
Yusuke struggles to keep up against Sensui's fighting techniques. Sensui tries to separate Yusuke and the others in order to capture Kuwabara.
Yusuke relentlessly chases after the truck that is being used to carry Kuwabara away, but a psychic named Hagiri steps in to challenge him.
Hagiri stays undiscovered by Yusuke as he attacks him from afar. A familiar face shows up just as Hagiri takes aim to put an end to Yusuke.
Yusuke touches base with the rest of his group. Genkai sends Yusuke and three others to go to the cave where their enemy awaits.
Gamemaster Amanuma brings videogames to life and challenges Yusuke and the others to play them. Finally, Amanuma himself joins the game.
Amanuma is being used by Sensui; he will die if he loses the game. Kurama makes a difficult decision in order to save the Human World.
Yusuke's crew finally reaches the place where Sensui and the others are. Kurama stands up to fight against the fifth psychic, Gourmet.
The tunnel to the Demon World is nearly complete. While Yusuke faces Sensui by himself, the others get trapped inside the body of Itsuki's demon.
Yusuke enters a duel to the death with the overwhelmingly powerful Sensui. Sensui's personality suddenly changes when Yusuke manages to fight back.
Koenma makes up his mind to use the spirit energy he has harnessed in his pacifier over many years to seal the hole to the Demon World.
Both Yusuke and Koenma are of no match to Shinobu, Sensui's sacred energy-wielding primary personality. Yusuke, however, refuses to give up.
Kuwabara and the others worry that Yusuke is prepared to die fighting, but they are powerless to do anything while they are still trapped.
Kurama, Hiei and Kuwabara escape, but they are too late. Burning with vengeance, they head straight into the breach to the Demon World.
Kuwabara and the others arrive in the Demon World and try to fight against Sensui. Elite fighters arrive from the Spirit World to eliminate Yusuke.
Yusuke heads to the Demon World with a grown Pu and Koenma to continue his fight with Sensui. During the fierce battle, Yusuke starts to change.
The battle between Yusuke and Sensui comes to an end. After demanding a rematch from Sensui, Yusuke discovers that his opponent is very ill.
The Demon World breach is repaired, and peace returns to the Human World. Yusuke and his friends reflect on the past and move forward to the future.
Yusuke feels dissatisfied with his peaceful life. Koenma advises him to go see Genkai, who introduces him to the first Spirit Detective Kuroko Sato.
Three visitors arrive from the Demon World to inform Yusuke about his true father, Raizen, but Yusuke finds it hard to trust what they have to say.
Yusuke decides to say farewell to Keiko before leaving. Kurama and Hiei receive messages from Yomi and Mukuro, the other two kings of the Demon World.
Yusuke heads to the Demon World after saying his goodbyes at Genkai's. Upon meeting Raizen in person, Yusuke asks why he interfered against Sensui.
Hiei grows stronger in the six months since arriving in the Demon World. Exhausted from battle, Hiei has recurring dreams of his tragic past.
Hiei enters a showdown against Shigure, the demon who surgically implanted his forehead with the Jagan eye and showed him how to fight with a sword.
Kurama and Yomi had worked together as bandits until Yomi was blinded for an unknown reason. Now, Yomi threatens Kurama in order to join him again.
General Shachi grows jealous of Kurama for earning Yomi's trust. Genkai and Koenma help Kurama train warriors for a new fighting force.
Yusuke visits Raizen to train with him, but hunger has driven his father mad. After their fight, Raizen tells Yusuke why he stopped eating humans.
Yusuke visits Yomi to inform him about his father and to propose his idea of holding a tournament in the Demon World. Yomi tries to turn him down.
The Demon World Tournament gets off to a strong start. One by one, Yusuke and Raizen's former rivals pull ahead of the competition in the prelims.
In an ironic twist of fate, Yomi must face his son Shura in the prelims. Having received extensive training, Shura proves to be a capable fighter.
The tournament is well underway. Jin and Toya each face their own opponents as they work toward their dream of getting to fight Yusuke again.
Kurama transforms into Yoko Kurama during his grueling fight with Shigure, but he turns back into Shuichi Minamino in order to move on from his past.
A fierce battle unfolds between Hiei and Mukuro as both competitors try to break away from their pasts in order to put an end to all the hatred.
The showdown between Yusuke and Yomi has finally begun. Though he initially charges his opponent head-on, Yusuke loses the will to fight mid-battle.
Yusuke and Yomi exchange one last blow with all their might at the end of their battle. Finally, the Demon World Tournament comes to a close.
Everyone gathers at Genkai's for the first time in a long while, but Yusuke and Hiei are not present. Genkai discusses the eventuality of her death.
