Village of Women

Village of Women

Armenia, a village called Lichk where only women, children and the elderly reside. Men leave for 9 months of the year to work in Russia. In Summer, women cut the grass and store hay for winter. The sun arouses a certain laziness, a sensual relaxation. Autumn, with it’s different shades of red, is the season of birth and the potato harvest. Winter is near, a form of suspense sets in: whose husband will come home first? Preparations begin to welcome men, waiting is long and tiring. The men arrive with the snow. Fathers meet their children in December. The women are shy, they need time to get used to the presence of men once more. The children are happy to be close to their fathers. Spring sets in, the atmosphere becomes tense. Men depart for the land of tsars. Once more the women find the strength to do it all again, alone.

Dir. Tamara Stepanyan - 83min - 2019 - Armenia, France

"It’s a delicate subject; people being uprooted from their homes. Few films treat it delicately. So I wanted to explore it from a different angle. The struggles are there in an indirect way. It is in the songs they sing, in their eyes." - Tamara Stepanyan talking to Moving Images & People Journal

"a warm-hearted, stylistically assured portrait of a female community of fate who bear their difficult circumstances with lots of humour, warmth and a generous measure of lived feminism." - DOK Leipzig

"a gentle and striking piece of filmmaking, a portrait about what isn’t....Every take in Stepanyan’s film is a take of longing and of desire." - The Arts of (Slow) Cinema
