Back in Texas, Capt. Call organizes a mustang drive to Montana. He hires a Gideon, a former Texas Ranger, to head the drive. Newt falls into trouble in is rescued by a crusty rancher named Dunnegan.

Gideon's mustang drive encounters problems. Agostina must fend off the unwanted advances of cowboys. Call makes his way to Clara's ranch, and then moves on to Montana.

Clara's ranch meets an fiery fate, and she decides to join with Gideon. Call has the misfortune to meet up with the desperado Cherokee Jack. Dunnegan tells Newt of his inheritance plans.

A range war is erupting in Montana, and Call and Dunnegan meet alone to settle their differences. Cherokee Jack is running amok. Call tells Newt about their true relationship.
