While the conflict intensifies, Walter and Billy have a falling out over Frances.

When war breaks out, Billy enthusiastically enlists, while Walter remains on the farm.

While in Sydney, Billy falls in love with Frances's best friend Diana.

As the war escalates, Billy is shocked to learn that he will be sent to Gallipoli, Frances and a pregnant Diana flee to the estate of Robert Gillen.

While Billy endures warfare at Gallipoli, Frances makes a decision that has tragic consequences.
