About this movie

Ray Pelletier is looking forward to a quiet weekend of ice fishing with his family. Unfortunately for him the obnoxious big city father-son duo of Steve and Stevie Cote has picked the same weekend to spend at the remote frozen lake. But the two families' petty squabbles are soon eclipsed by a much greater enemy: something has awoken under the ice and its prey is human. Miles from civilization and with only a few inches separating them from the freezing water below, the Pelletiers and Cotes must now find a way to work together to fight the vicious creature that's out to hunt them. Director James Felix McKenney's HYPOTHERMIA is a modern spin on the classic monster movie, featuring memorable performances from horror vet Michael Rooker and co-stars Blanche Baker and Greg Finley.

Hypothermia, for what it's worth, is a poor (seemingly first) attempt at horror. I rented this movie for 99¢ and that is indicative of what to expect out of this film. The characters are blasé at best and come off irritatingly stupid. There is little reason for their actions and thus the first half hour is boring. I feel the director was trying to make some scenes tense but, having no emotional attachment to any of the characters, it is really difficult to care about anything that happens. ***SPOILERS*** As for the creature, I think I would have liked this movie if it went for a "fear of the unknown" type of creature. At first the movie only gives quick, fleeting glimpses of the creature and, honestly, that is when the movie is at its best. However its best only proves to be mildly creepy. Horror fans will be disappointed. The film quickly dispels any fear the audience has of the creature when we get to see the creature in full. It is downright goofy-looking. I feel if the film had stayed away from letting the viewers see the entirety of the creature, it could have done better for itself. ***END SPOILERS*** All in all, you get what you pay for. Casual viewers beware.
