It is 1941 and the Germans have won the Battle of Britain. Detective Douglas Archer finds himself working under the brutal SS in occupied London. Archer investigates the murder of a black marketeer. When the glamorous US journalist Barbara Barga is spotted at the scene of the crime, Archer's gut feeling that this crime is far bigger than it would at first seem is confirmed, and he soon finds himself embroiled in a deadly plot.

Breaking the curfew, Archer stays the night and Barbara convinces him not to turn the Resistance down - he knows too much, they could kill him. Archer's call for a police car home is intercepted by Huth and he is driven through early morning London to a huge aerodrome. There he finds a guarded hanger and Huth together with his superior, Professor Maximilian Springer.

Archer trails Hesse to a brothel in Central London and a secret meeting between the German Army and the British Resistance. There, Colonel Mayhew is trying to do a deal to help spring the King in return for helping stop the SS having control over research at Bringle Sands. If the King is free and able to confirm Conolly's rank it would transform Britain's position in the world. Archer is introduced to the Army's senior commander, General Von Ruff who asks if John Spode made a copy of the calculations his brother stole from Bringle Sands.

Archer meets with Kellermann who gleefully informs him that the army will be licking their wounds following the Highgate bomb. When Archer asks for his help in releasing Harry, Kellermann tells him it will not be easy.

Barbara faces the ruthless Kellermann in his cells, desperate to know not only what is going on between Huth and Archer but also what was on the burnt film found at her house. Despite knowing the horrendous repercussions of staying silent, Barbara refuses to give Kellemann any information and is relieved when an American diplomat arrives to free her but only under the condition she leaves the country immediately. Kellermann is enraged when he hears of the King's escape and the revelation that Huth took out two patrols that morning.

The Second World War's Battle of Britain has ended in victory for Hitler's Germany and the population of 1940s Britain struggles to adjust to life under Nazi occupation. Detective Douglas Archer, forced to work under the brutal SS in London, is determined to continue to do his job in the service of his country. When investigating what appears to be a simple black market murder, Archer is dragged into a much darker and more treacherous world where the stakes are as high as the ultimate outcome of the war.
