About this movie

Academy Award-winners Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft star in this powerful drama about a mother's emotional struggle to understand her troubled daughter. Jessie (Spacek) is an epileptic with a failed marriage and a delinquent son who decides to take control the only way she can—by taking her own life. Thelma (Anne Bancroft), her widowed mother, is oblivious to her daughter's depression until she becomes frightfully aware of her plans. Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, it’s a heart-wrenching, riveting power struggle as Thelma tries everything within her power to convince Jessie to find hope. I've seen this awesome movie so many times and it never gets old. I love the cast and the performance makes me feel like I'm a part of it. I know the pain and the acceptance of her predicament. I absolutely love this movie.

Poignantly staged, brilliantly portrayed, and impossible to turn away from, this is the only film I have seen regarding depression that allows depression to voice its viewpoint and reasoning and dark will. If this doesn't make you think about mental illness from a new perspective, nothing will. Features some of my all time favorite lines in film. Unforgettable.
