The Legacy

When Signe the florist is visited by the eccentric artist Veronika, the older woman takes an unexplained shining to Signe and asks her to deliver a few bouquets to her family estate of Grønnegaard. Veronika's own children Gro, Frederik, and Emil are reluctant to spend the Christmas holidays with her, and despite Gro's best efforts, her mother manages to disappoint her once again. It is only when tragedy strikes that the Grønnegaard family secrets begin to be revealed, and Signe finds herself unexpectedly entwined.

With the passing of their mother, the Grønnegaard siblings gather their friends and family to honour her in a unique New Years Eve send off. Emil returns from Thailand after three years of being away, and Frederik returns to what was once his father's home, both with the intention of figuring out their mother's will. Gro is stressed and preoccupied with the ceremony arrangements, and decides to announce her mother's intention to turn the house into a museum before discussing it with her brothers, or even securing the needed documentation. Even as Signe timidly returns to the family she never knew, who seemingly welcome her with open arms, there may be more about Veronika's will that will shake this family to the core.

Gro ploughs ahead with the plans for the museum, in spite of Frederik's adamant objections to this appropriation of his father's house. He manages to find a legal loophole that denies Gro and the museum trust their claim to the mansion, but Gro refuses to give up. She learns she must get Signe to honour Veronika's letter, and tries to win her over with promise of the family Signe's always dreamed of. Andreas, Signe's all-star handball-player boyfriend, is not so convinced of Gro's sudden affection for Signe and tells her to keep on her guard.

Signe learns that Gro hasn't been completely honest with her about her, Frederik and Emil's rejection of the museum, and decides to hear Frederik out before she commits to signing anything. Frederik is shocked to hear about Veronika's letter, and dismayed to hear that Gro has gone so far ahead with her plans, getting Signe involved. All of Veronika's children meet and Signe proposes a solution that she believes will see them all happy, but she has yet to see this family's true colours.

With the museum plans going ahead, in a moment of despair and fear for his home, Thomas divulges crucial information to Frederik that could dissolve the claim Gro and the museum trust have over the Grønnegaard estate. Armed with this new information, Frederik is so focussed with laying his claim to the legacy, that he does not see how much his family, and especially his wife Solveig, need him. Desperate to makes sense of her own families, Signe is frustrated at the situation she finds herself in, and decides to take matters into her own hands.

Gearing up to face Frederik in court for her claim to the Grønnegaard estate, Signe hires a lawyer and must get a copy of the deed of transfer of the estate to the museum trust. She seeks helps from Gro, now the laughing stock of the Scandinavian art world, but Gro refuses to help Signe for fear of Frederik's threats to send her to prison. With his own family falling apart, Frederik decides to make a final strike against Signe, but Signe refuses to back down so easily.
