In 1897, Winston Churchill (Simon Ward) is a 22-year-old second lieutenant serving as war correspondent in India. Proving himself under fire, Churchill writes, "The River War," a book critical of British General Kitchener (John Mills). An average student with strong innate intelligence and a desire to prove himself to his parents, Churchill soon realizes that a successful Army career could be a springboard into politics.
