Dariko and Khaka are the husband-and-wife team behind Jikha TV: an ultra-low-budget local news station in the remote Georgian town of Tsalenjikha. The pair run the station out of their own home, chasing down stories with a sense of professional pride that belies their more-than-modest resources and audience – from a rare owl sighting to weekly obituaries. In a series of exquisitely captured tableaux, Salomé Jashi (Taming the Garden) turns this charmingly comic, quietly inspiring portrait of small-town life and death into a commentary on shifting attitudes to media and the gulf between local and national identity in post-Soviet Georgia.
