George and Serena Pemberton (Academy Award® nominee Bradley Cooper and Academy Award® winner Jennifer Lawrence), love-struck newlyweds, begin to build a timber empire. Serena soon proves herself to be equal to any man: overseeing loggers, hunting rattlesnakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. With power and influence now in their hands, the Pembertons refuse to let anyone stand in the way of their inflated love and ambitions. However, once Serena discovers George’s hidden past and faces an unchangeable fate of her own, the Pembertons’ passionate marriage begins to unravel.

For fans of the Ron Rash novel…avoid at all costs! Not only does it fail to capture a semblance of the soul of the book, it is a vapid, hollow showcase of two actors who clearly had no interest in the characters they were supposed to play. Shame to the screenwriter who adapted it. Shame to the director that didn't read the book. Shame on the two actors for sleepwalking through performances whilst dreaming of the laurels of past accomplishments. Do yourself a favor, read the book and don't waste a minute of your time with this garbage. Unfortunately, there was no zero rating…but it did make me laugh a lot so that accounts for something.

I fell asleep to awake with Jennifer Lawrence catching snakes with a trained bird to solve the rattlesnake problem in the logging camp. I was actually excited to watch this when saw the starring cast. I think Bradley is still shooting Muslims and Jennifer is missing Peta. Absolutely awful acting, by both in this film. They are flat and uninspired so their chatacters come across so..I actually started it a second time and again had high hopes during the first 15 or 20 minutes. It falls apart fast after.

I love Jennifer Lawrence. She is a great actress, but the story was just so boring. I was surprised to read that the movie was not a small budget film. The movie needed a better screenplay and more drama. I don't know what the problem was, but even if the movie had casted Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron to play the leads, I still don't think they would have been able to add enough fire and water to make the story interesting.
