About this movie

Danny McBride (Pineapple Express & Tropic Thunder) stars in his breakout comedic performance as Fred Simmons, an inept, egotistical, outrageous Tae Kwon Do Master who rules his mini-mall dojo with an iron fist. Fred thinks he's the ultimate sensei, but suffers a ferocious karate chop to the ego when he finds out his wife's been having an affair. To regain his fleeting honor, he embarks on a rip-roaring journey to meet his idol martial arts celebrity Chuck "The Truck" Wallace -- a debauched karate master and total jerk. Between the dojo throw-downs, hand-to-face combat, and serious board-breaking, you'll never recover from the comedic fury of The Foot Fist Way.

Perhaps it hit a bit too close to home. For thirteen years I practiced the style of martial arts displayed in this film for better or for worse; I won't go into the positives or negatives of this life experience, but needless to say it is basically portrayed with total accuracy in this picture. For those outside of martial arts that might be pretty funny, but in many ways for myself it just depressed me (I have since moved on in my own training to arts that are much less sporty than the American Tae Kwon Do used in the film, but that's neither here nor there). I suppose it was hard for me then to separate my experiences with the character study of the film, which when all is said and done is quite fascinating (in that somewhat same painful way that Mike Judge movies are). Like many films of this level/budget/whatever you want to call it, every actor is perfectly cast and they play it like it's their own lives. You do get the feeling of being a fly on the wall watching something so horrible that you cannot turn away.
