About this movie

Woody Allen's romantic comedy A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK tells the story of college sweethearts, Gatsby (Timothée Chalamet) and Ashleigh (Elle Fanning), whose plans for a romantic weekend together in New York City are dashed as quickly as the sunlight turns into showers. The two are soon parted, and each has a series of chance meetings and comical adventures while on their own.

I hate that I am writing this!! I have never liked a Woody Allen film, at least not knowingly. I rented this because it caught my attention, from the poster to the cast to the trailer, and the premise. After seeing the trailer I told my Mom it looked a little bit like a Woody Allen movie only better, and it turns out I could not have been more right!! The fanning girls are great at what they do, and Elle Fanning has found a way to be adorable and sweet and quirky and it just works. The cast is loaded. Jude Law I did not recognize at first because his portrayal and his accent, or lack thereof, are dead on. This movie is fun and surprising, old and new all at the same time, and I am really annoyed that I can no longer say that I don't like Woody Allen movies because I just absolutely loved one.

This movie is a love letter to New York City locations with a character that almost seems like Woody Allen himself. Timothee Chalamet embodies the mannerisms of a young Woody Allen almost to a tee. This movie is not deep by any means but it covers the mushy love stories of these characters only a Woody Allen film can do. Like his other movies especially Scoop and Match Point this is a lighter version of these two films combine. If you are looking for a far fetch Woody Allen romantic film, then this is the film for you. Elle Fanning hits this move out of the park and is the one of the best things about this movie.

I was reluctant only because I thought maybe my age of forty-five might be to aged for this movie. I was wrong. Lovely movie, great little storyline, clever at times, drew me in and made me crack several laughs. Not bad for a Friday night alone. Charming film.
