About this movie

Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan assembles an all-star cast, including Joaquin Phoenix and Sigourney Weaver, Adrien Brody, William Hurt and Bryce Dallas Howard, to bring the thrilling tale of an isolated village confronting the astonishing truth that lies just outside its borders. At first glance, this village seems picture perfect, but this close-knit community lives with the frightening knowledge that creatures reside in the surrounding woods. The evil and foreboding force is so unnerving that none dare venture beyond the borders of the village and into the woods. But when curious, headstrong Lucious Hunt plans to step beyond the boundaries of the town and into the unknown, his bold move threatens to forever change the future of the village.

TLDR: it's not a horror film - it's actually a well-made study of characters, fear, ideals and loss, with gorgeous music and (I think) a relatively good ending. It seems to be trendy to dislike this film - but I think it's really pretty good. Great music, well-filmed, well-acted, and if you've not seen it before, it's tense and confusing with a (I think) satisfying conclusion. I think it was mis-advertised as a horror film - it's not - it's more of a suspense/mystery study of character and belief/fear. First time I saw it was plenty tense enough, and a re-watch years later was still satisfying as there's plenty that you don't notice the first time around - once you know the story you see some of the characters differently. Some folks seem to dislike it as it's not scary enough, some folks criticise the twist, but neither of these things bothered me - I hate films that never bother to explain the spooky stuff that happens at first, and I didn't see the twist coming the first time I watched it.

I love this movie and the director. When I watched with my brother and sister, they both liked it, but one of them didn't like how the villain had learning disabilities. Its still a great film with a great soundtrack, especially the music in the end credits

An odd but none the less entertaining film with a cunningly crafted twist and conclusion. It feels as though you're being let in on something very real.Great measures can be gone to,in an effort to retain innocence.
