Ilo Ilo

Set in Singapore during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Troublesome grade-schooler Jiale lives with his comfortably middle class parents, Heck and Leng. With another baby on the way, they hire Teresa, a Filipino immigrant, as a live-in maid and nanny. An outsider in both the family and Singapore itself, Teresa initially struggles to manage her new life, but soon forms a tight bond with Jiale until circumstances change. 2013 Singapore Film Commission
