About this movie

Academy Award-winner Martin McDonagh makes his directorial debut with this murderously funny film starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hit men who, after a job goes awry in London, are sent to Bruge to lay low. A beautifully preserved medieval Belgian village, the picturesque city is an odd fit for the two professional killers, but it doesn't take them long to find their own kind of trouble and, possibly, romance amongst the cobblestone. Academy Award-nominee Ralph Fiennes also stars.

Very disappointed. Lots of good reviews by others, and I actually bought the blu ray because of not only the reviews but because I like the tree main actors. And they are good actors in this movie, but the movie fails on several fronts imo. Mainly because it seems to me the writer and director tried to mix Mary Poppins with Apocalypse Now. One scene is like a chamber of commerce video for the city, next scene a child getting brains blown out up close. Ridiculous all around.

Poetic nihilism. A well-crafted movie supported by top actors. As for the cinematography, several scenes were absolutely painterly. Again: well made. But why was it made? I suppose this fits our post-modernist times: so much skill and craft, but, in the end, nothing to say. Overwhelming in the watching, but afterwards the viewer is left empty.

One of my favorite movies of all time- and within those favorite movies, this is a favorite of my favorites. Cannot wait for his new movie Banshees to come out, seeing as he wrote AND directed In Bruges. Literally only writing this review in hopes that someone who hasn't seen it will read this and then see it, because praise needs to be given to movies that are worth it.
