The "trip" is a very interesting visual experience. Still a good watch 20 years later, despite this film containing the cheesiest scene ever -- an Alien posing as her dead father on a beach -- and one of the most outrageous message ever (choosing a scientist to meet Aliens only if he or she believes in God). Unfortunately, seeing what's going on in today's world, that scene in Contact can be understood as just a small exaggeration.

Good combination of science, tech and faith/religion. Of course being a science and tech guru, seeing a machine be built by math in the attempt to travel beyond our humanistic vision, it intrigued my interest.

This is a beautifully shot and acted movie about our first contact with aliens. I've come back to watch scenes from the movie every now and then, years and years later, especially the beach scene. It can be slow paced, but it is intellectually deep, based on the book of the same name by Carl Sagan. The only slightly unbelievable thing for me is the somewhat Deus Ex Machina actions of the mysterious billionaire benefactor. Aside from that it is well worth sitting back and enjoying this as a fine meal. If you're looking for a Marvel popcorn movie, try something new. You might like it.
