Snowpiercer

I understand why this movie is a cult favorite, but I don't understand why that cult is so large. It has an interesting premise with a nice twist at the end, but the train setting combined with the major violence makes it feel like you're in a video game. The protagonist and his team move car by car from the back to the front of the train. In each car, there is a violent brawl with lots of casualties followed by some challenge (and info gather) in order to get the next door open. Gets exhausting over time.

The acting and editing are both surprisingly good for such a trite retelling of the same old story. The story itself -- one of the worst retellings of it. This is only worth watching for the orgy of violence. Don't come into this film expecting anything new or innovative. It's the same predictable story you've already seen a hundred times: [SPOILERS] the fated chosen one, set up to be chosen from the beginning, shockingly rebels against his fate at the end by doing something to upend the system.

There's a reason Western movies are somewhat formulaic - because that formula tends to work. This is very much an Eastern film. I must give credit to this film for being new and inventive, but I was uninterested. With no characters to root for and a choppy pacing, it was difficult to invest 2 hours into this movie. I fell asleep the first time I watched it and thought that I had missed a large portion... the second time I saw it, I realized that it didn't matter. You can see the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes and still get the same effect. Don't waste your time.
