About this movie

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good until the day the mob decides to “close the loop”, sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels.

If you like this movie, great, but out of all the time traveling stories that have been made this one is near the bottom of the barrel. It starts interesting and has a nice vibe, but once Bruce Willis is introduced the movie can't seem to stick to one plot. A twist about some kid with anger issues is a weak point to ground a movie on. At the very least the kid could've been older, just so he could actually feel like an important part. Lazy writing, lazy results, goodbye.

The story was surprisingly good for a time travel movie. But I was expecting the whole thing to fall over on the basis of Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt being nothing alike and thus breaking the illusion that they are the same person. But nope, he mimicked Bruce Willis to a degree I was genuinely surprised by. By the time they finally showed the transformation sequence, I'd already been sold.

Original story, always keeps you guessing with a twist at the end, great acting (especially by Joseph Gordon Levitt) and good action. Too bad it didn't do better at the box office because I really consider it one of the best movies of the year. Better than hunger games and on par with skyfall.
