About this movie

In this unbelievably tense supernatural thriller, a foreigner's mysterious appearance in a quiet, rural village causes suspicion among the locals - suspicion which quickly turns to hysteria as the townspeople begin killing each other in brutal outbursts for seemingly no reason. As the investigating officer watches his daughter fall under the same savage spell, he agrees to consult a shaman for answers - unknowingly escalating the situation into something far more dangerous. Over six years in the making, director Na Hong-jin's meticulously crafted follow-up to the globally acclaimed THE YELLOW SEA and THE CHASER (his third to premiere at the Festival de Cannes) smashed box office records upon its debut in South Korea, where fans are already making return viewings to catch new clues and debate what's sure to be the most talked-about ending of 2016.

I was genuinely surprised by this movie. I wasn't necessarily scared at first, but it left more of a feeling of surprise. Granted, I was really confused by the end, but after looking online at possible interpretations, it all made sense. I had an idea of the themes, and I brushed it off like my thoughts couldn't have been right, but again, the interpretations helped and made this story even more scary. Will definitely watch again.

This movie, while long, tells a story worthy of a full novel, with enough twists and turns to keep you both interested and mystified. It has a tone of despair and hopelessness that is more present than actual scary scenes, becausebthis isn't played like a modern jump scare movie. It's more about the mystery and the atmosphere. Definitely a classic.

I downloaded this movie because somehow it was recommended to me. I didn't watch it for 6 months until one day I was bored so I started it and played scrabble simultaneously. The beginning was kind of hokey and I didn't know where it was going but around the halfway mark I had abandoned scrabble and put my phone down and was glued to the screen. Give it time folks. It really is worth the wait. I can see why it was recommended to me.
