About this movie

Fictional film based on the true life experiences of circus sideshow freaks made in the 1930s. The film was edited for American distribution and banned in England for over 30 years. However, recently, it has taken on cult status for its campy plot and the real circus entertainers who appear in the film. Directed by horror film master Tod Browning.

The pro: the film is great. The con: the movies was very obviously chopped down from it's original run time. The film ends pretty much right when the climax of it begins. We don't get to see what happened to Cleopatra before she gets turned into a bird. And we have no idea what happens to the strong man. I understand censorship. But a film must have a beginning, middle and end.

Tod Browning's best! Despite what this review says, this is actually a censored cut, but it's the most intact version available. I'm hoping the test version (the one with the entire revenge scene intact) turns up. No luck so far, but hey, the lost portions of Metropolis turned up. There's always hope. :) Still recommendable, even though it was badly censored, and still is.

This is missing the entire revenge scene! Does it exist? Other edits of very important films have been found so who knows? Excellent film! Still compelling after seeing it many times, the "freaks" or circus folk were not actors for the most part...until they appeared in Freaks, but what chemistry! Highly recommended. Mandatory for any fan of the odd, the edgy, and the macarbe. GOOBA GOBBA GOOBA GOBBA! WE ACCEPT YOU ONE OF US!!! 😱
