About this movie

From the producers of Shaun of the Dead, ATTACK THE BLOCK is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen street gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing project into a sci-fi battleground, the low-income apartment complex into a fortress under siege. And it turns a crazy mix of tough street kids into a team of kick ass heroes. It's inner city versus outer space and it's going to explode. © 2011 Canal+ Image UK Limited, UK Film Council 2010 and Channel 4 Television Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

I've heard about this movie and was always curious since it fits into that tough category of sci-fi comedy/ satire. The writing was terrific and reflected the language of a London block like this. The characters were over the top, yet within reason and believable. The reason for the aliens and what they were after made sense and was not some farfetched excuse for how they acted. A definite thumbs up. Good special effects and this probably had a modest budget so they made their money work for them.

At first we thought these kids were little jerks. I mean, they *are* little jerks, but they have heart. They're all played well, and even though we couldn't stand them, we were concerned for them. The acting is fantastic on all fronts. The special effects are TOP NOTCH and appear to be mostly practical. This movie begins with action and doesn't let up until just before the end credits roll. Attack the Block is funny, intense, and thought-provoking. The character development is well done, with even most of the minor characters getting a chance to show off their individuality and help deal with the situation at hand. While we only had 5 stars to give, my niece summed it up as "12 out of 10, would watch again" which is pretty high praise from a sullen teenager.

You might find yourself having to turn on the subtitles at times, depending on your tolerance for certain kinds of British accents, but don't let that stop you from watching this excellent film. I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked the performances, the direction, the writing -- indeed, everything about this movie. Absolutely terrific.
