Since this classic isn't available on Blu-ray (are you listening Criterion?) we rented it from on-demand from and found the quality of image quite satisfying. Burt Lancaster stars in and directed the film which features the screen debut of Walter Matthau. The film often veers into melodrama and even the performances might seem a bit hammy to a modern audiences but there's a pleasing decency about the whole affair that's kinda refreshing. Overall, it's an entertaining, as well as good-looking film with a rousing score by the great Bernard Herrmann.
