A mixed bag. Casting for some of the characters is downright bad (Jack Black is great and all, but does not belong in an epic three-hour long King Kong film to say the least), and some of the CGI is very dated, which is odd, since Peter Jackson made the LotR trilogy, which has great special effects. That being said, the action is mostly superb, and there's a really well-done, nasty scene with some huge bugs and the death of Kong is still very sad. The stuff about the movie that should work does.

This movie is phenomenal! It's everything the original story from the 1931 novel is supposed to be. Namely, because it emphasizes the affection Ann Darrow develops for Kong over the course of the story. In 1933, Fay Wray argued that her character should form a bond with Kong; as was the original concept. However, the movie studio forbade that because they said audiences weren't ready for that. They only wanted to have another movie monster to compete with Universal Studios' Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, and Mummy characters. The key to the King Kong story is to show that Kong is an intelligent creature with reasoning abilities beyond the limitations of all other beasts. The whole point of the King Kong story is for Ann to form a bond with him, and to be the only one that sees in Kong an enlightened being who was cursed by nature to have a noble soul trapped in the body of a beast. For all it's brilliance, the 1933 film missed an opportunity to strike that emotional chord with audiences. Peter Jackson, thank God, did not miss that opportunity. No, he seized upon it, expanded upon it, and told his story beautifully. 5/5! Truly astonishing work!

While this movie has its moments, it still has flaws. First the good. So they designed king Kong very well. And all of the other creatures were designed very well. Some of the human characters did a good job to. And that final battle in the city was pure awsom. But now the flaws. This movie drags a lot in some places. And it takes 45 minutes to see king Kong. But overall king Kong has a decent cast and has a great story.
