About this movie

Nominated for five Academy Awards -- including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress -- is the epic tale of one Swedish family's pursuit of the American dream during the great Swedish migration to the American Midwest in the 1850s. Magnificent performances by Oscar-nominee Max von Sydow ("Awakenings," "Hannah and Her Sisters") and the acclaimed Liv Ullmann ("Scenes from a Marriage," "Cries and Whispers") make history come alive.

My paternal grandparents both came from Sweden about 1900 or so. The scenes in the movie are very similar to what they encountered in Sweden. My grandfather had to move heavy boulders to clear land, my grandmother grew up on a farm and her parents said we have nothing to give you (the farm would go to their son), go to America. I have seen the movie twice - yes it's long - but for getting a glimpse of similar family history it is well worth the time.

One of the best movies I ever saw. As good as Pelle the Conqueror, which has a related theme. Great world class acting and great historical recreation.
