About this movie

Dani and Christian are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight. From writer/director Ari Aster and starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, and Will Poulter.

Disappointingly over rated and over long. I hoped against hope that this was not going to be a re-hash of The Wicker Man, but it really was, and without any of the vitality of the older film. Where Edward Woodward was fightin' the good fight, these flaky losers were in it for the ride and frankly, they got what was coming to them. Some good moments - I loved the constantly unsettled baby that provided a sinister undertone to some sleepless nights - but this film really failed to deliver. Joins Suspira as another bad millennial rehash of a 70s classic.

Don't listen to the negative reviews. How anyone can call this a bad film is beyond me. Maybe it's a 'bad film' if you live on a diet of Avengers movies, sure. This film will be seen as a classic. Much like 'The Wicker Man' and 'The Exorcist' it draws out the tension, until you are clawing blackboards with your fingernails in your mind. Very strong performance from the female lead, outstanding scenography, this is an arthouse horror movie. 10 out of 10 from me.

As somebody interested in asatru I can say this film has an authentic feel. It's in no way trying to rip off the wicker man it depicts a nordic paganism that's akin to odinism with the rune work and the volunteering to end one's own life cycle to welcome the new The wicker man is the old practice of wicca before neo paganism turned it into a tree hugging fest. This film and the wicker man are great depictions of true European practices before the introduction of the bible. Don't listen to them.
