Adso, a young soldier and son of a German general befriends William of Baskerville, a learned and intelligent English Franciscan friar. The two journey to a remote monastery where an important conference will be held between the Pope's delegation and that of the Emperor. They arrive just as the body of one of the monks is found -- initially dismissed as a suicide, suspicions arise when a second body is discovered shortly after.

With the Pope's delegation on their way to the Abbey, William and Adso investigate the mysterious deaths and conclude they are the work of a serial killer. They find a trail that leads straight to the infamous library and devise a plan to break in to the labyrinth.

William and Adso manage to escape the library and begin to decipher Venantius' message, suspecting a connection to Dolcino. Meanwhile as the papal delegation continues to advance towards the monastery, Gui receives a message from the pope expanding his power even further.

Everyone's anxiety increases as they search for the missing Berengar. Remigio shares his suspicions of Benno with William, claiming a strange connection between him and Berengar and Venantius. William later deciphers the second part of Venantius's code, leading him once again into the mysterious library.

About this show

Northern Italy, 1327. The Franciscan friar William of Baskerville (Guglielmo da Baskerville), followed by the young novice Adso of Melk, reaches an isolated Benedictine abbey to participate in a dispute over poverty between representatives of the Franciscan Order and the Avignon papacy. Upon arrival in the abbey the two are involved in a chain of mysterious deaths.
