Celia and Alan haven't seen one another for sixty years. When they're reunited via a website, their passionate feelings for one another are reignited. When Alan's car is stolen, he and Celia end up stranded in Skipton, where they ring their respective daughters to pick them up. Apart from being in their mid-forties, it's obvious that arrogant Caroline and happy-go-lucky Gillian have almost nothing in common. Seconds before they actually meet, they argue bitterly over a parking space. Inside the cafe, Celia and Alan introduce them to one another and make a surprising announcement.

William discovers his dad and Judith drunk together in the house when he comes home from school early one day. John and Caroline appear to be back on track, but when William reveals what he's seen, Caroline is appalled. During the engagement party Raff is arrested by his Uncle Robbie for beating up Paul Jatri. Gillian is terrified it will emerge that she's been sleeping with 22-year-old Paul.

Celia and Alan decide on a civil ceremony at Southowram Hall, a creepy Medieval Hall near Halifax. After a supportive chat with Gillian, John tells Caroline he's moving back in whether she likes it or not. Meanwhile, Paul confirms to Gillian that he told Raff he was sleeping with her. Later Paul is beaten up a second time. The episode ends in a thunderstorm with Gillian's Land Rover inexplicably catching fire.

Caroline and Gillian are worried about Alan and Celia, who appear to have vanished. In actual fact, they're locked inside Southowram Hall. A police search begins, with Robbie lending a hand. Cold and unable to sleep, Caroline and Gillian open up to one another and form a supportive bond. In the morning, the curator and his assistant discover that Alan and Celia have been shut in the hall all night. Gillian, Caroline and Raff are overwhelmed with relief when the phone call comes. Caroline heads off home. She tells John that she's been seeing somebody else.

Caroline throws herself whole-heartedly into her relationship with Kate. Alan and Celia have lunch in the pub with Harry and Maurice. Alan can't decide which of them should be his best man, so he ends up asking them both! Caroline tells John that the 'someone' she's seeing is a woman. Devastated with the implications, he doesn't know who to turn to and ends up over at the farm, hoping for Gillian's sympathy. Here he gets drunk and nastily tells Celia that her daughter is a lesbian. An appalled Celia insists on going home. Drunk Gillian invites John to go to bed with her.
6 Episode 6
10/28/12
Celia reacts badly to John's revelation that Caroline is gay. When she and Alan have dinner with Caroline and Kate, she's very rude to Kate. Alan feels crushed after this, and tells Gillian that it's over between him and Celia. Back in Harrogate, a livid Caroline gives Celia a dressing down. Celia duly apologizes to Kate and begs her not to leave Caroline. The next day Celia is shocked to learn that Alan's had a heart attack. She stays by his bedside, telling him that their wedding plans are back on now she's made things right with Caroline. Against the odds, Alan regains consciousness.

About this show

From award winning writer Sally Wainwright comes this uplifting comedy drama about romance and second chances. Childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia fall for each other all over again when they are reunited on the internet after nearly 60 years. Their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age. But this is also a story about family, and with family comes baggage. How will these two very different women cope with their parents' announcement that they're getting married.

The twists and turns of relationships in an extended family are marvelously dramatized and quite believable. Celia's view of her daughters love life is eons away from reality and allows no personal freedom. So ..constant breakdowns while everyone including Celias new love interest( a bit out of touch) seek some common ground. Great supportin cast!

Lots of lose ends not tied up. What happens to the sweet little boy orphan? Why do neither Julien or Carolyn end up with partners? Why is Louis left stilted by the NZ woman? Someone got tired and didn't finish off there work. Disappointing. Obviously, there must have been a contract that had to be fulfilled so the producers produced "any old thing." A cruel thing to do to a good series. Why is this not available on Amazon, by the way? Another annoying end to the last series.

LTiH is made of excellent writing, superb acting and wonderful direction. This show and actors are the best on TV globally. Sarah Lancashire is a force of nature. Nicola Walker does the emotional heavy-lifting perfectly. Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi are masters at conveying honest heartfelt emotion. It is fair to say the entire cast is head and shoulders above the rest. All episodes are excellent.
