About this movie

Jake Gyllenhaal reteams with PRISONERS director Denis Villeneuve in this sexy and mind bending thriller. Adam Bell is a glum professor who has grown disinterested by his ordinary life. When Adam discovers a man who appears to be his double, the identical men meet and their lives become bizarrely and hauntingly intertwined. Gyllenhaal is transfixing playing both roles, journeying through a world both familiar and strange. The film's final and unnerving image will not be soon forgotten by audiences. In the end, only one man can survive. Featuring bonus interview explaining the mystery.

A lot of people talk about it as a thinking film. Though I was inspired to formulate some new personal hypotheses about some basic understandings I hold, I mostly credit it to my loose grasp of reality. It's entertaining, but no masterpiece. It's great artistically and sets its theme early and sticks to them. I just feel the execution is flaccid at points. Performances are great though, without a doubt. Movie is solid, and even when you understand the message the ending is pretty weak.

Although there's some cool visuals and slightly interesting symbolism, not to mention really good acting, this movie isn't as good as people might say. Once you get past the spider symbolism and see the actual plot, there's not as much to get out of it. The movie spends so much time trying to come across bizzare if you don't understand it that it fails to do anything interesting to the plot it's actually presenting. It's good if you want to feel smart for figuring it out I guess.

When this first came out I was super excited to watch it because Jake is one my favorite actors ever. But this movie was by far the worst I have ever seen. I think Jake wasted his talents on this one. The story could have been made way better, the music score was terrible. It was like a compilation of things you would think might be interesting to put in a movie, but really shouldn't. Watch Nightcrawler instead if you want a good Jake movie.
